Dockdrop Stuff
March 4th, 2008First of all, Matthew Harper has posted a blog entry on configuring Dockdrop to work with .Mac.
Secondly, I’ve received a lot of positive feedback and feature requests on this version of Dockdrop. I’m still figuring out which features I’d like to include in the next release, but so far it’s looking like:
- The ability to upload an entire folder of pictures to Flickr
- Add an option somewhere to close Dockdrop after an upload completes
- Needs to prompt before overwriting already existing files or mark subsequent file uploads with a time stamp
- Possibly the ability to setup multiple FTP or SCP sites, although this will require some significant changes to the configuration panel
- Some basic Applescript support for specifying an upload method etc.
- The ability to assign a hot key to trigger an upload on a file selected in the Finder
- Several minor bug fixes
Thanks for all the comments and feedback. I will post to the blog when I release the next version.

First of all - awesome app! Been wanting something like Dropdock for a very long time, but have been too lazy to make it.
Thank you!
Second of all - a small but probably non-trivial feature request:
I’d like Dockdrop to be able to incorporate timestamp info into directory names. That is, /www/docs/{year}/{month}/{day}/
This is how I organize random shared files on my site when I don’t have any other criteria for organization. At present, I just stick /www/docs/2008/ into the folder name which is good enough, but I’d like the month and day auto-populated as well.

Thanks for the great feedback. Several others have asked for this feature as well so this may be something I consider for future releases.

Great app! I was just thinking about having multiple FTP accounts, everyone has it. Lookingforward for that fix!
HOpe you can do it.

Dude, sounds stupid, but if you make a simple use as “move the file in a folder of your disk” to me it would be helpful!
For example, i drag a file there and goes in the folder of my local webserver…think about it

Interesting idea! And it wouldn’t be at all hard to do. I will think about it.

Ciao, good job. But i suggest denvelop the view versione, like dropview to view the content of folder and remove the file from online.
Bye.

The list of upcoming features looks great. Would you consider incorporating Sparkle ( http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/ ) into this so that when you release updates we can be notified about them?

Casey-
Thanks! Yes, there is a fair chance I will incorporate Sparkle. It is a really neat project and very easy to integrate. I have used it before.

Thanks Paolo. I will give it some thought.

hi
i’m using a feature calles “smartdisk” from the german e-mail provider “web.de”, but i’m having difficulties connecting to that server using Dockdrop.
does anyone here use the same service and has any idea how it works? i tried the settings provided by the web.de help but i couldn’t get it done. i don’t know what to enter in the “path” field
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Great app! I use it for daily backup of my master thesis. So a timestamp or even just a suffix like mypaper_1.doc woud be great!
All the best from Norway

Thank you! I’m glad it’s useful. There will definitely be a timestamp or number suffix added in the next version.

Is there a page somewhere that gives instructions on connecting to web.de? I might be able to help you figure out what settings to use.

Hey John… dude, you rock. This app rocks. The simplicity rocks. You copying the URL to the clipboard after the upload rocks. What a great little app. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Also I don’t know if you care about feature requests from us but I like the ideas of the moving to a specified folder on an attached volume and also the ability to do multiple FTP sites although like you said, it will complicate the FTP panel a bit.

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I’m so glad you like the app.
I am definitely interested in your feature requests, it’s really amazing the amount of positive feedback and interest in the application I have received.
I will certainly consider adding the ability to simply move files to a specified folder - you are the second person to request this feature.

I absolutely love this little app, it’s fantastic! I use it daily to quickly and easily share files with others - it’s by far the most convenient method I have ever come across! Thanks so much for your work on this.
I would like to suggest one future feature… I think it would be great if we could use this to send files to AmazonS3.

David-
Thanks for the great feedback! I will give your request to integrate Amazon S3 support some consideration. The underlying communications framework Dockdrop uses does support S3 which should make the job or adding S3 support much easier.

This program is genious, i love how easy it is to do.
A couple of things:
- It would be nice to have a dashboard widget…that way we can load multiple instances of it..each for an account, and it won’t take up dock space
- It would be nice to have the ability to right-click on the dock icon and get a list of the 10 recently uploaded items, which when clicked, re-paste that url into clipboard.
Good luck!

Love the app.
Multiple FTP would make this killer. In addition, to the ability to post to Gmail space, similar to how the Firefox Gdrive extension works.
10 recent URLs mentioned above would be helpful, as well.
Good work!

Just to make my suggestions public: I’d like to see the ability to set up SCP (etc) with blank passwords, and also the ability to display an error message when the transfer fails (SCP not enabled, etc). Thanks for a great little app.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Great, thanks!
Maybe I did something wrong, but it seems not to accept https, is this correct? If so, the support for https would be my number 1 feature request!
Would be so happy if this would work, because this app is just what I am needing since years!

Thanks for the feedback.
Both of those are excellent ideas. Thanks!

Thanks! I will give Gmail space uploading some thought. A lot of others have asked for the 10 recent URLS feature as well so this may well be in future versions.

Yes unfortunately the library Dockdrop uses for WebDAV does not support SSL. Thanks for the feature request, I will keep it in mind.

Just a quick +1 for the recent 10 uploads request. That’s a nifty idea I hadn’t thought of and would love to see implemented. Cheers.

Supporting the Keychain and using the ssh-agent would be really good features, i don’t like that i have to enter a password into dockdrop where every other programm i use for ssh/scp uses my ssh-agent and the keyfile with password from the keychain.
Nice tool you wrote there!
April 7th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
It would be nice if the bezel was optional and the upload progress was shown as a badge on the dock icon (at least if you only have one upload location setup). I kind of wish the icon was a bit nicer too…
April 14th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Now that Flickr supports video, will you be updating DockdropX to allow for the additional file types for Flickr?
May 9th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Thank you for the great simple Software!
I have two wishes:
- pasting the URL should be possible before the upload is ready, that I can write the mail while the file is uploading
- it would be nice if dockdrop creates a mail with the URL inside
Thank you!

Love, love DockDrop. Thank you for creating it.
Would love to be able to define multiple accounts (SCP in my Case), e.g. “Work”, “Home”.
Thanks,
David
