Gmail Notifier in Ubuntu Breezy

Gmail Notifier

About a year ago I wrote a Linux alternative in Python to the Gmail Notifier released by Google using the libgmail library. It took off rather well for a while but Google kept changing things about the way Gmail worked meaning I had to constantly update the libgmail library. Since then many others have got involved with the project and recently Juan Grande re-wrote most of the code to use the Gmail Atom library meaning the project has become fairly stable and reliable as a day to day tool. The greatest part now though is that someone has built a Gmail Notifier package for Ubuntu Breezy that can be apt-get installed if you have the universe source package line in your sources.list uncommented. So if you run Ubutu Breezy, try:

sudo apt-get install gmail-notify

The Gmail notifier project site can be found here
and the Ubuntu package page for the app can be found here

Thanks for the offer, although I believe someone has already submitted a langs xml file for that language although I’m not sure if it has been included in the most recent tar ball. We get an unbelievable amount of people offering translations.

Well done this is a great work :)

Can we include the facility to use the proxy also..so that the people who are using the proxy for internet connection can also use it.

or can it be done with some minor changes in the code/.conf file?

    Best regards

I really like gmail-notify, and I use it on all my Linux machines. I even hacked the code so that a single left-click on the icon will open up Gmail for me.

However, I’ve been trying to implement another hack on the code, but I’m not really a Python guy. When the self.gotourl code executes, I’d like the icon to go back to red until the next check. On my Linux machine at work I have it set to check only once an hour. When I go to my inbox and read my messages, I then need to tell it to “check now” so it goes back to icon.png. However, it it could go back to the original icon automatically when I go in to read my email (and stay that way until the next check), that would be great.

Obviously, if I go to Gmail not long before it automatically checks, and I don’t finish reading my email before the automatic check, it’ll show as if there are unread messages anyway. The best way to handle this would be a way for self.gotourl to both reset the icon *and* to start a new check interval right then, but that’s probably unnecessarily complex (especially since the project has been dormant for so long).

although I invest almost all of my working day on the internet playing online games like zynga poker or farmville, I nonetheless like to spend some time to read a couple sites now and then and I’m comfortable to report this most recent article is in actual fact reasonably good quality and very much improved than half the other poor quality trash I read today , anyhow i’m going to take up a few rounds of zynga poker
